This season’s Hertfordshire Senior Silver (“Open”) tournament took place on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 August at the Hertfordshire Sports Village. Over 100 players from across the country took part and Hertfordshire was well represented with both juniors and seniors looking to get tournament practice early in the season. This was the first time the first round was played in groups which meant over 140 matches were played.
The mens’ and ladies’ singles were played on the Saturday. In the mens’ singles Ollie Baczala (Hants) met Angus Pedersen (Middlesex) met in the final with Ollie winning 21-11 21-19 The ladies singles final was between Freya Patel-Redfearn (Middlesex) and Li Lian Yang (Notts) with Li Lian winning 21-15 21-16.
All the doubles events were played on Sunday starting with the level doubles and as the day progressed the mixed doubles were started. In the mens’ doubles the number one seeds Harley Towler (Lincs) and Robert Golding (Middlesex) dominated the day eventually beating Hertfordshire’s Matt Widdecombe and Angus Pedersen 21-8 21-3 in the final. In the ladies doubles Hertfordshire’s Leona Lee and Sophie Watson (Leics) won a mammoth semi-final but that took its toll as they had to retire in the final so Zoe Hallam and Emily Witts were the winners. In the mixed doubles Harley Towler and Li Lian Yang teamed up and beat Matt Widdicombe and Caroline Westley in the final 21-10 21-13.
Overall it was another successful Herts Open tournament, played in good spirit with lots of excellent badminton. I would like to thank the referee, Mike Newlove, and Jo Williams, for all their help over the weekend which ensured the tournament ran smoothly.
