This season’s Restricted tournament took place across two weekends at a new venue, Queenswood School, with the singles on Sunday 22 September and the doubles on Sunday 29 September. 52 players from across the County took part with over 90 matches played.
In the men’s singles there were four boxes of four with the top player in each group going through to the semi- finals. All the winners of the boxes were under 20 years old, which is promising for the county teams, with Steven Elliott meeting Zack Bobrowski in the final. It was a fantastic game full of high quality badminton with Steven eventually winning 13-21 21-19 25-23.
In the ladies singles there were two groups of three with Caroline Hale meeting Lavigne Leung in the final, which was a repeat of their round robin game. In another tough match Lavigne won the first game but eventually experience told with Caroline winning her eleventh Restricted singles title 15-21 21-11 21-10.
There were 16 pairs in the men’s doubles split into four boxes. Conor Bambrick and James Lauder played Lyall and Zach Daniels in the final with Conor and James winning 21-17 21-18.
There were two groups of three in the ladies doubles with Holly Clayton and Olivia Clark meeting Charlotte Willis and Kath Warden in the final. It was another close three set match which Holly and Olivia eventually won 21-17 9-21 21-17.
There were 14 pairs in the mixed doubles which were split into four boxes. James Lauder and Charlotte Willis met the mother and son partnership of Jo and Harry Goode in the final. This was another epic three setter with Jo and Harry coming out on top 21-16 19-21 21-19.
All the matches were played in the right spirit and everyone appeared to enjoy themselves. Many thanks to Barbara Lewczynska for her help in running the doubles day as I was stumbling on and off court!
